  • Lauren represents several tax-exempt entities, including public charities, private foundations, and social welfare organizations. She advises her clients on a wide range of matters as their outside general counsel. Lauren also manages direct representation and systemic legal advocacy on behalf of charter schools and charter management organizations.

    Throughout her legal career, Lauren has merged various interests, ranging from litigation to transactional law, in service of the public good. She clerked in the United District Court for the District of New Hampshire and the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court. Lauren also served as a Skadden Fellow, prior to the law firm’s unlawful capitulation to the Trump Administration, proudly representing children as a court-appointed advocate in juvenile rights matters, such as special education and truancy cases and abuse and neglect petitions in the Essex County Juvenile Courts of Massachusetts.

    Prior to law school, Lauren was a public school teacher and education policy advocate in New Haven, Connecticut. She has worked with several nonprofit entities throughout her entire career.

  • Charter & Independent Schools

    • Prevailed in petition for declaratory ruling to clarify meaning of "reasonable costs" that qualify for reimbursement under Connecticut General Statutes, Section 10-66ee(d)(7)

    • Defeated motion to stay declaratory ruling and motion to amend to the administrative record, both filed by opposing counsel in administrative appeal 

    • Prevailed in administrative appeal, with school districts’ entire case dismissed and Declaratory Ruling upheld by Connecticut Superior Court

    • Defending favorable judgment from state trial court in Connecticut Appeals Court

    Entity Formation, Compliance, and Governance

    • Formed new public charities in Connecticut and Massachusetts

    • Received two years of penalty abatement from IRS on behalf of a mission-driven CT-based LLC

    • Provided CT nonprofit client and municipal agency partner with enterprise memorandum of understanding and corresponding data-sharing agreements to facilitate a municipal pilot program involving several public entities with the goal of supporting at-risk youth

    • Designed and reviewed grant agreements on behalf of MA nonprofit client supporting habitat sustainability throughout the country

    • Brought NY nonprofit into compliance by drafting required policies and supporting implementation by board of directors

    Pro Bono

    • Won petition for return of child under the Hague Convention on behalf of Colombian father whose child was wrongfully retained in CT

    • Serves on the Board of Directors for Wild Woods Restoration Project, Inc., a volunteer organization in the Hudson Valley that grows local ecotype native plants for restoration projects

    • Secured an Individualized Education Program (IEP) for a MA student, who thrived academically and behaviorally with proper support
